Northeast Avalon
Regional Plan
Profile
The population in the Northeast Avalon Region is growing! Between 1981 and 2006 the region experienced a net increase of 17.2%, even while the population for the province as a whole was declining. Population growth in the region is partially due to people moving in from other areas of province in order to take advantage of educational and economic opportunities as well as the urban and suburban lifestyles. Much of the growth is happening outside of the city of St. John’s and in the attractive and affordable suburban municipalities of Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South, Paradise, Portugal Cove-St.Philips, Torbay, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove and Flatrock. For example, over a 25 year period, Paradise grew by 280%, Torbay grew by 78%, and Portugal Cove-St. Philips grew by 71%. Not every community in the area grew during the same time period; Bay Bulls, Bauline, Bell Island and Witless Bay declined overall, however there were increases in the latest census period between 2001 and 2006. A recent study projects that communities, such as Torbay, Paradise and Conception Bay South, within short commuting distance to St. John’s, will continue to grow in the coming years (NFLD Economic Research and Analysis Division 2008).
